Asahi is a well-known Japanese brewery company that produces beer and other beverages.
Asahi wanted to present their employees with a Christmas gift. The main focus is on providing entertainment or offering something valuable that employees will appreciate and not simply throw away. The emphasis is on avoiding excessive financial burden while delivering a thoughtful gesture.
Engine Room
Concept Idea
When thinking about the perfect gift that would please all Asahi employees regardless of their religion, we looked for common denominators in their interests and culture. Being part of the brewery group, beer undeniably holds significance within their corporate culture. Nevertheless, it's apparent that employees' connection to beer is already excessive.
Considering that this gift is scheduled for distribution in December, we came up with the idea of creating a tea coaster. This versatile item can be conveniently used year-round for hot drinks like cocoa and coffee.
Aligned with Asahi's commitment to sustainability, we opted for wood as the primary material for this gift. The choice of a hexagon shape aligns with ecological principles, as it generates less waste during production compared to the conventional round shape. This gift is therefore not only original, but also environmentally friendly.
Considering the Japanese origin of the company, I was inspired by the Japanese design of Kumiko. Kumiko is a traditional Japanese technique of folding wooden sticks. The design I chose also resembles the shape of a snowflake. This way, we wanted to bring a piece of Japanese culture to the home of Asahi employees. The diameter of the decoration is 10 cm according to the size of a typical beer coaster.
Wooden decoration has two possible uses. In addition to the aforementioned tea mat, it can also be hung on the Christmas tree as an elegant decoration.
Since every great gift deserves to be unwrapped, we've also taken care of the packaging. The wooden decoration will be nestled within a paper package and elegantly fastened with a blue ribbon. However, this isn't just any packaging – it's also an origami puzzle that employees can transform into a tree. Inside, a QR code provides a link to a video tutorial for crafting an origami tree from the package. The ribbon serves a dual purpose – it can hang the wooden decoration or be used to adorn the origami tree. This offers employees the opportunity to enjoy assembling the tree and practicing eco-friendly packaging reuse, all without needing extra materials.
For the packaging design, we chose green for the outer cover, as this side will eventually become an origami tree. For the interior, we adhered to Asahi's visual identity, ensuring consistency with the brand identity. Considering that the format is small and will be printed, we opted for clean and minimalist elements.
